Treatment is often divided into two phases.

Phase 1 is to align the opposing jaws into their correct position and this generally requires the use of plates and can begin from age seven until full eruption of permanent teeth depending on the individual case.

Phase 2 is the placement of braces to align and straighten the teeth. This is generally done when all the permanent teeth have fully erupted.
