ORAL SURGERY
The goal of Modern Dentistry is to prevent tooth loss.
When a tooth cannot be saved, extraction (removal) of the tooth may be the only course of treatment. Most minor surgeries are performed in our practice; however, the Dentist may choose to refer to a Maxillofacial Surgeon for more complicated cases.
Panorex X-ray
A Panorex X-ray allows us to see a complete picture of the alignment of your jaw, the positioning of your teeth and if there is sufficient space for your third molars (wisdom teeth) to fully erupt. In addition, it is an excellent diagnostic tool for evaluating the supporting bone for possible cysts or tumours.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth are otherwise known as the third molars, which usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24.
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if the surrounding gum becomes infected when the tooth fails to erupt properly – this is known as an Impacted tooth. This failure to erupt properly may occur either because there is not enough room in the jaw for the tooth, or because of its abnormal position. Some of the problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth include:
- A trapping and build up of plaque and bacteria
- Development of cysts
- Tumour development
- Infection in the mouth
- Jaw and Gum Disease
- Intense pain and soreness in the mouth
- Facial swelling
- Swelling of the gum line in the back of the mouth
Many oral health specialists will recommend the removal of wisdom teeth, as early extraction will help to eliminate problems.
